Regional Transportation Planning for the Peninsula Region

PRTPO is the Regional Transportation Planning Organization (RTPO) for the Peninsula region. The Peninsula region includes all of Clallam, Jefferson, Kitsap, and Mason Counties, encompassing the Kitsap and Olympic peninsulas. PRTPO is a cooperative intergovernmental forum for coordinated transportation planning in that four-county region. This website hosts the products of PRTPO’s coordinated planning process and provides access to meeting materials and other useful resources.

Regional Transportation Priorities for the Peninsula Region

Preservation

Taking care of our existing infrastructure and protecting investments that have already been made helps communities keep their life-cycle costs low and stretch existing resources further. PRTPO supports efforts to increase funding for local, state, and tribal preservation programs.

Multimodal Mobility

People need to make different travel choices at different times. PRTPO supports development of an integrated multimodal transportation system that makes walking, biking, transit, and driving safe and efficient for more people, and expands broadband access so more people can meet daily needs without having to travel so much. Multimodal mobility matters for everyone. PRTPO supports efforts to increase equitable access to safe and convenient mobility options and the opportunities that access provides.

Environmental Stewardship

Transportation may not impact the environment as heavily as it once did, but it will take hard work to address a century of impacts and create a healthier system going forward. PRTPO supports efforts to address past damages to fish habitat and mitigate transportation’s legacy impacts on our communities. PRTPO supports the transition to zero-emission vehicles that is underway across the region.

Safety

Safety for all system users is of paramount concern for our streets and highways, transit systems, trails and sidewalks. PRTPO supports funding programs that address location-specific problems and systemic programs that improve safety for all modes of travel, for all travelers.

Economic Vitality

The wheels of commerce run on the streets and highways, waterways, rails, and airstrips of our transportation system. PRTPO supports transportation system investments that stimulate local, state, and tribal economies, enhance safe and efficient freight mobility, and connect people with the economic, educational, and social opportunities needed to support strong, resilient communities.

Fiscal Responsibility

The region’s local, state, and tribal partners own and operate the region’s transportation system. They understand the importance of fully funding and addressing targeted chokepoints – they just don’t have the resources that requires. PRTPO supports efforts to provide transportation agencies with sufficient, sustainable, reliable funding. PRTPO also supports efforts to reduce the burden many small local agencies face when they have to use federal funds on their local transportation projects.
